How long have you been DJing?

16 years with a few gaps somewhere along the line

How did you start DJing?

My older brother smuggled me into a few raves and club nights when I was 14 dressed in his clothes and that sowed the seed. He was into his Djing which led me to basically copy him. Bought some copy Soundlab decks and started to fool around, took me about 6 months to realize why the dj was moving there hand back and forward. The deck platters also used to expand in cold weather making mixing even more difficult!

What type of music can we expect to you play?

I have gone through a few different styles along the way and like to mix the genres up. You can hear me playing anything from Hip Hop through to Drum and Bass. Right now I am playing a lot of dirty, wonky, fidgety House with some Baltimore, Breaks and Dubstep seasoning.

How did you get into this type of music?

Originally I guess it was my brothers record collection which was broad and covered everything from Acid Jazz to Techno, it taught me that there was good music in every genre. Other influences have come from seeing great underground djs (my mates), old skool rave tapes, free parties, DMC videos, raving in general, good record shop pushers more recently blogs have allowed even more access to amazing producers and styles.

What has been your most embarrassing DJing moment?

I have had the obligatory take off the wrong tune and several tonearm scats during sets before. Probably thinking I can MC as well is up near the top, mind you it’s not that embarrassing at the time!

What has been your best DJing moment?

Hard to nail down really, the earliest one I can remember was playing to 400 sweaty ravers in my mates parent’s barn. He had decided to put on a free party while they were away for the weekend and it turned into a road blocking event! The light that projected into the sky that could be seen within a 5 mile radius probably didn’t help matters haha, good work Shawy. (He got kicked out on their return).

Fast forwarding about 6 years it was playing just before the Stanton Warriors at a night I used to promote called Buttwild in Newquay. It was a rollercoaster weekend full of shenanigans. We had booked them for two nights and the first night was a disaster and I was ready to quit promoting. But the 2nd night was large and the club was packed, proper up for it crowd, loved it and haven’t really stopped promoting ever since!

More recently playing at Aeon Festival  and Glastonbury this year definitely will be remembered, nice one Magnet!

Who is your favourite artist?

Don’t really have one and not very good with names, the red one?…..Come round and have a look (and listen to the radio shows :) ). Being a bit more helpful I guess standout producers for me are Hijack, Tipper, Kyle Watson, Mele, 2 Bit Thugs, Jesse Rose, Trevor Loveys and many others I cannot think of right now.

What is you all time favourite album?

Depends really they have changed through the years, it was Adam and the Ants, Prince Charming at one point and now its probably Martyn, Great Lengths.

Where do you shop for music?

Originally it was lots of leaning on counters and nodding of heads, which later progressed to leaning on a keyboard, clicking and waiting for the posty and now it’s all leaning on a keyboard, clicking and downloading. Shops along this journey have been Binary Star, Mighty Force / Reform, Shiva, Chemical Records, Phonica, Juno, Stompy and Beatport.  Should also mention the prethora of wicked blogs out there that provided access to lots of amazing free and legal music from producers of all genres. Disturbed Beats, Electric Zoo, Noise Porn theres loads go and have a look.
